The Best Chicken Thief in All of Europe

The Best Chicken Thief in All of Europe by Mike BefelerNow available.

What price did our World War II veterans pay for Liberty? Ed was a Jewish-American soldier who served in the 399th Infantry Regiment of the 100th Division in Europe during World War II. Ed recalls the battles in the fox holes and hand to hand combat.

When captured, Ed spent seven days without food and water in a railroad boxcar. In Stalag IV-B, Ed lost over 65 pounds in just four months eating potatoes, and bread made from saw dust. In desperation he tried and failed to escape, before being released in April of 1945.

For a period he was on his own in the part of Germany under Russian control. In spite of his hatred of Germans for how inhumanely he was treated in prison, he stole chickens to save four German refugees and called himself “The Greatest Chicken Thief in all of Europe.”

However, he was not okay when he re-entered civilian life. He had suffered several serious wounds. While his body healed, the psychological wounds remained. He suffered from PTSD, considered suicide and had reoccurring nightmares that caused him to once nearly choke his wife as he dreamt of being a prisoner.

We learn about his life, divorce from his first wife as a result of the PTSD and consequently the loss of his son’s custody, and the detrimental effects that the trauma of war and imprisonment by the Germans had on the rest of his life, Yet, his resilience, his sense of humor, and humanity prevailed and he made a life for himself.

At 94 years old, Ed told his stories to the author Mike Befeler who helped Ed reunite with his estranged son after 57 years. Ed retains an amazing sense of humor and shares his wisdom about politics, history and much more.

This historical biography is a must read for anyone who wants to really understand World War II and the personal sacrifices our armed forces made to liberate the world from Hitler’s tyranny and oppression, from the point of view of someone who was there.

Praise for Living With Your Kids Is Murder

"It's hard to beat a team that includes a wisecracking old fart and a straight-talking young sprout, and Befeler's second geezer-lit entry delivers." - Kirkus Review

"You would think an amateur detective with an addled brain who wakes up each morning with no clue what happened the day before couldn't possibly solve a murder. You would be wrong! In LIVING WITH YOUR KIDS IS MURDER, crime magnet Paul Jacobson, the man with short-term memory loss, aided by his precocious granddaughter, Jennifer, outwits the police at every turn. It's Nancy Drew meets Memento! What a concept! And what fun! Mike Befeler's Geezer-lit mystery is just the thing for what ails you. Enjoy!" - Parnell Hall, author of the Puzzle Lady crossword puzzle mysteries.

"Mike Befeler’s second time out with his memory-challenged hero, Paul Jacobson, hits another home run. The plot is funny, the writing, witty. Paul visits family and every move he makes gets him in trouble with the police. And he can’t leave town until all the problems are solved. The way his senior citizen character deals with never remembering the day before is cleverly written. A fun book to read." - Rita Lakin, Author of GETTING OLD IS A DISASTER

"In LIVING WITH YOUR KIDS IS MURDER, the sequel to RETIREMENT HOMES ARE MURDER, octogenarian Paul Jacobson is at it again, stumbling onto crime scenes and promptly forgetting them. "Mystery fans of all ages will welcome Befeler's third humorous cozy featuring octogenarian Paul Jacobson. When Paul, who suffers from short-term memory loss, awakes one morning next to an attractive woman he doesn't know in an unfamiliar garage apartment, he decides to clear his mind by going for a walk. Aided by a daily journal he keeps and his 12-year-old granddaughter, a computer whiz, Paul once again proves a formidable sleuth." - Publishers Weekly

"Senior Moments Are Murder, Mike Befeler's third humorous cozy mystery, enters octogenarian Paul Jacobson's world where he starts us off laughing from the first sentence. Paul's journey is hilarious and also very touching when he becomes friendly with the homeless population. Despite the police detective's cynical opinion of him, Paul proves to be a highly capable crime solver, staying several steps ahead of the skeptical constable." - Coloradoan

“A gentle tale in which that venerable subgenre, the amnesiac whodunit, is freshened by a geriatric hero whose short-term memory loss is all too believable. Befeler’s third installment won’t ruffle any feathers. It’s the sort of cozy your grandparents would love.” - Kirkus Review

The V V Agency, Mike BefelerThe V V Agency

The first book in a new paranormal PI series.

Trade Paperback ISBN 978-1-172926477-5

Imagine a dash of Philip Marlowe wrapped in an urban fantasy. The V V Agency is a paranormal mystery that spoofs the PI subgenre and introduces the transvictus—a unique shape shifter.

Van and Vanna run a detective agency, but clients never see them together for a simple reason. A sexual encounter transforms one into the other, and nudity renders them invisible. This presents some interesting dilemmas for his and her love lives, but gives them a distinct advantage when doing detective work. In this, the first book in the series, Van and Vanna take the case of a woman suspected of killing her husband.

Praise for The V V Agency

“A cheeky PI story with a fresh urban-fantasy twist. It’s a snub nose revolver loaded with intrigue and chuckles.” — Mario Acevedo, author of Werewolf Smackdown

“Befeler branches out into one of the most interesting paranormal mysteries I’ve ever read. Definitely not some of the same old, same old. Fun and compelling.”—Donnell Ann Bell, Author of The Past Came Hunting and Deadly Recall.

“Zany and clever, THE V V AGENCY is written in a style reminiscent of detective novels of the ‘40s, but oh so much more original. The sleuth, when naked is invisible—but that’s not his only power, the second one is problematic to his sex life.”—F. M. Meredith, author of Dangerous Impulses
